April 16, 2005 - I had another letter published in the Morning Call today. Here is a link which will only be active for a week or two. Below is the original version. This letter was written in regards to a local school district allowing students to participate in the National Day of Silence.
Regarding the article on the Saucon Valley School District allowing students participate in the “National Day of Silence” I have to wonder what really goes on in our schools. I wonder why children in public schools are allowed to use a public school as a forum for organized protest and dissent. I wonder what kind of group recruits children to publicize their agenda. Imagine the outcry if a pro-Second Amendment group attempted such a thing.
Aside from this obvious misuse of the what schools are intended for, children should not be engaged in such matters. After all, children cannot vote, cannot be drafted, cannot enter into contracts, and cannot be executed if they murder. Yet, somehow, they are allowed to voice their position on a mainstream social issue on school time and school grounds. If a child wishes to protest, then that child should do so on his or her time at his or her expense, not taxpayer time and expense. We've known for many years that advertisers have been hard at work trying to “brand” children, now we better watch out as the special interest groups move in too.
