Stop Whining

Conclave 2005 ended yesterday as a new pope was elected. Almost as soon as the announcement was made the whining began. Some seem to think Benedict XVI is too conservative. All I have to say is when something starts getting out of control it's best to bring in someone with a strong view on core beliefs. The worst thing Conclave 2005 could have done was listened to and catered to the lunatic fringe. Good job. I am not Catholic and I am not very religious but I feel that religion provides discipline, guidance, and encourages one to think before one does something. Those are three things, I think, many people have not had in their lives. I don't feel that one has to be religious in order follow a church's teachings. It just seems that whenever someone comes into a role of power and that person is not known as one that gives in easily (or gives away easily), the whiners come out.

Well, personally, I feel as though the pope should not be a person who actively covered up pediphilia among the priests, as they should be held in higher esteem. Also, maybe they need to lighten up on their strict rules on women, gays, and abortion. And along those lines, why can't the Catholic church allow the use of condoms in Africa, if only to reduce the spread of aids? It would slow the death rate of millions. Put yourself in their place when you claim we need more 'structure'.

I see the 'structure' based more on ideology rather than reality sometimes. I am not against comdom use but I don't think the Church should condone it either. Besides, once AIDS is cured, something else will take its place. I am a strong believer in Thomas Robert Malthus's theories and I wouldn't be surprised if the Church is too.

I'd agree that religion can provide discipline and guidance, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it encourages people to think. Except, of course, thinking up religious justifications of their actions and/or non-actions.

Actually, religion focuses on those who DON'T think, and prefers to target those individuals because they are easily led, which is the whole purpose of religion. People who think for themselves, or at least say they do, have different ideas and tend to follow their own lead. That is why the Catholic church has so much trouble trying to control American Catholics, because of our freedoms and culture of individuality.

I tend to agree with most of what you just said. As for "thinking" I was leaning more towards thinking of consequences of one's actions. Lying, stealing, etc.; often religion is the base for both what's right and wrong. It's ok to foster change or be progressive but there needs to be bounds or, at least, a pause to think, before proceeding.
